Homeowners insurance will not pay for flooding damage. Yet, less than 2 percent of Connecticut residents have flood insurance.

Connecticut Flood History

  • In 1935, 17 inches of rain caused some of the worst river flooding ever experienced in parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts.
  • Connecticut was the hardest hit victim of the worst flood in the history of the eastern United States in 1955 - leaving 1,100 families homeless and 20,000 properties damaged.
  • Hurricane Bob struck in 1991 and Hurricane Gloria in 1985. Presidents declared flooding disasters in 2005, 1999, 1992, 1984 and 1982.

It's not just "big" disasters that cause damage, however.  Every year, rivers can flood.

Yet in spite of the risk to many of the state's 1.7 million households, less than 35,000 are insured.

Almost four months after a nor’easter and flooding in Connecticut, federal disaster grants and loans to those with storm-related losses exceed $6.4M. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports that 2493 individuals and businesses from the seven designated counties -- Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London and Windham -- registered for disaster assistance before the August 13, 2007 deadline.

Connecticut residents need flood insurance.
